Four Stages of Technology Use:
  • Substitution: the computer substitutes for another technological tool, without a significant change in the tool's function.
  • Augmentation: the computer replaces another technological tool, with significant functionality increase.
  • Modification: the computer allows for the redesign of significant portions of a task to be executed.
  • Redefinition: the computer allows for the creation of new tasks, inconceivable without the computer.

Assistant to CEO:
You are an assistant for a CEO of a large company. She has just approached you with the following task. “I have a meeting in 20 minutes with a prospective new client named Mint.com. I know nothing about them! I need you to research the company for me and have an e-mail in my inbox in 15 minutes with the run down of who this company is and what they do, and the potential for growth in the market in which they operate.” Two paragraphs will do.

Broker:
You are a broker for a large financial initiation. Your boss has heard of a new company that just launching an IPO and needs to know more about the company before he walks into a meeting in 20 minutes. He only has a stock symbol of XRS. Please send him a two paragraph summary of the company, your recommendation for purchase or not with explanation.

Advertising:
Your advertising firm has just been hired by Barnes & Noble to come up with a slogan for their new e-reader that launched last week. Look at the competition of devices in this area and then suggest a slogan and an explanation on why you think this slogan is right for this new device.

Stock Trader:
You are do in a meeting in 20 minutes and the firm you work for wants you to quickly come up with a recommendation on whether they should invest in Netflix.com. He needs a concise two paragraphs with your recommendation and explanation.


Agricultural Expert:
A farmer brings you in a picture of a problem he's having with his wheat. He's waiting in the waiting room for you to come up with what the disease is and what he can do about it.

Netflix is the business model of the future for the following three reasons:
1. Excellent customer base that can be marketed to other entities
2. Has an efficient method to stream video downloads to millions of households
3. They are moving into 3D gaming
